This is technical work at the trainee level in taking, classifying, comparing, and identifying fingerprints. Work requires knowledge of techniques, methods and procedures utilized in the identification of fingerprints that is gained through a combination of specialized training and on-the-job experience. Contacts require basic courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others and includes contacts to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. The work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by somewhat diversified procedures or precedents, but some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate method, technique, or procedure to follow. Fingerprint classification work is patterned involving similar situations and generally requiring only the choice of the correct procedure. Work is performed in an office environment. The work schedule will be subject to shift work to cover 24-hour-per-day, seven-day-per-week operation. Operates computers and specialized equipment such as fingerprinting equipment, computerized information systems, radio, teletype, and other automated record-keeping systems. Physical demands consist of utilizing equipment, sitting or standing at a workstation for extended periods of time, stooping and bending, and occasionally lifting objects weighing less than 50 lbs. Work is performed under general supervision where work assignments are varied and, although subject to standard practices and procedures, the worker is permitted some latitude to set priorities subject to superior's approval.
Examples of Work:
  • Classifies, compares, and identifies fingerprints.
  • Conducts fingerprint searches through local, state and national crime information computer systems.
  • Confirms warrants from JSO and assist other agencies in confirmation.
  • Verifies and assembles appropriate records for hearings, serving of warrants and court proceedings.
  • Responds to written and verbal inquiries.
  • Provides copies of fingerprints, photographs, or arrest records as requested by various law enforcement officials and other authorized personnel.
  • Maintains fingerprint and criminal history files.
  • Files and retrieves various documents and reports for department and court use.
  • Enters information into manual and automated record-keeping systems.
  • Takes fingerprints of individuals for the purpose of criminal history searches.
  • Operates two-way radio, teletype, typewriter and computerized information systems.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Fingerprint Science.
  • Knowledge of the NCIC Fingerprint Classification System.
  • Knowledge of the Automated Fingerprint Identification System.
  • Knowledge of alphabetic and numeric filing systems.
  • Knowledge of Sheriff's Office policies and procedures.
  • Ability to perform fingerprint comparison.
  • Ability to conduct criminal history searches.
  • Ability to take legible and quality fingerprints.
  • Ability to collect, sort, organize, and evaluate data to develop logical conclusions.
  • Ability to operate a computer to enter and retrieve data accurately.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio, teletype, and other standard office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to rapidly make logical decisions based on available information.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
Open Requirements/Supplemental Information:
OPEN REQUIREMENTS : A two-year combination of education and/or experience in clerical work, which must include the operation of a computer. Must be able to type a minimum of 30 words per minute (WPM).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
: The probationary period for this class is one year. This classification performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to pre-employment, random and other drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville's Drug Free Workplace Policy (0401). Persons employed in this class will be subject to the same background investigation given to sworn personnel.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION : Florida/National Crime Information Certification (FCIC/NCIC) required within 3 months & must be maintained.
