As part of a hardworking and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for Materials & Processes tasks related to Metallic and Soft Materials for various spaceflight systems with a focus on Engines. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of material characterization, supporting design for producibility, and new material development. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities:

Lead selection of materials and processes for use in manufacturing of turbomachinery hardware.

Review and approve piece part and large sophisticated assembly production drawings

Collaborate with design, analysis, manufacturing, integration and quality teams on the implementation of product design requirements into production

Complete Materials & Processes Engineering responsibilities on First Article Inspections, non-conformances, repairs and continuous improvement projects

Find opportunities for new or improved material and process development, coordinate test campaigns, provide program updates to IPTs.

Participate in the development of internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation, implementation, and qualification procedures.
Qualifications:
-
B.S. or higher degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field

2+ years materials and processes engineering experience directly related to aerospace flight programs (level commensurate on experience)

Experience with one or more of the material systems used in the aerospace industry (Ni-based alloys, Cu-based alloys, Al-based alloys, Ti-based alloys, oxygen-compatible alloys…)

Experience with one or more manufacturing processes (casting, forging, additive manufacturing, joining, machining, coating, cleaning, NDT methods, tight tolerance assembly, leak testing, final acceptance testing of integrated hardware…)

Experience with standard methods for testing mechanical properties (including fatigue, fracture, creep, stress rupture) of metallic and soft materials

Experience with project management including tracking technical progress, managing resources and budget

Experience with statistical analysis methods and related tools

Desired:

Masters or PhD in Material Science/Engineering or related field

Experience directly related to turbomachinery including material and process selection, development, scale up for manufacturability, production qualification and sustaining manufacturing support

Deep expertise on one or more of the manufacturing processes (casting, forging, machining, coating, cleaning, joining, NDT, tight tolerance assembly, leak testing, final acceptance testing of integrated hardware…)

Deep understanding of environmental and thermomechanical behavior of aerospace material systems at wide temperature ranges from cryogenic to elevated
-
Expertise on hydrogen embrittlement and mitigations

Demonstrated experience on developing new aerospace processes, refining existing ones, running test plans for analysis and qualification of components

Hands-on skills with SEM, EDS, metallography, mechanical testing
-
Experience with failure and forensic analysis of aerospace hardware
-
Experience supporting design and manufacturing teams in an aerospace environment, including providing technical rationale for material and process related defects, publishing specifications, test reports, and design substantiation documents

Knowledge of industry standards for material data analysis (e.g. MMPDS)

Understanding of aerospace quality standards and Quality Management Systems
