Position Summary

Summary:
The EEG technician performs tests which include EEG, evoked potential (VER, BAER, somato-sensory, and infant hearing screening), and surgical EEG monitoring. Must effectively interact with patients, families, physicians and other health team members. The EEG tech works within the scope of the American Society of EEG Technology guidelines while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. Demonstrates sound judgement regarding observations, findings and concerns. The EEG Technician contributes to positive patient outcomes and meeting the cultural expectations of the organization by exhibiting professional behavior and EEG expertise. He/she shares responsibility for all aspects of patient and team functions.

  • The EEG tech demonstrates a commitment to excellence so that the highest standards of performance, safety and best patient experiences are achieved. Demonstrates continuous improvement in each of the following areas of performance so that optimum outcomes are achieved.
  • Develops and maintains EEG Department services consistent with patient needs, so that physician satisfaction, federal/state regulations, and JACHO standards are followed. Obtains clear and readable EEG tracings, audio, visual and somatosensory evoked potential studies and infant hearing screens which may include: measuring the head, obtaining medical history and preparing the client so that the neurologist interpretation of testing is optimized.
  • Communicates effectively with physicians and other team members and reports significant findings in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of all equipment and technology necessary to complete duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintains patient safety, comfort, confidentiality and privacy and adheres to HIPPA standards
  • Transcribes and copies all dictated reports generated from EEG testing within 24 hours of dictation and forwards to physician appropriate departments
  • Maintains the integrity of the neurodiagnostic lab: checks daily inventory of supplies and replenishes supplies when necessary; cleans and prepares testing lab prior to patient use; checks calibration of equipment; ensures equipment is maintained and clean
  • Develops a personal development plan at the beginning of all probationary periods and within the first three months of each fiscal year. Holds self and others accountable for adherence to defined behaviors and provides appropriate constructive feedback to team members to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • The EEG tech is accountable for seeking, maintaining and increasing knowledge and skills which impact the performance of self and others, including mandated education (such as HIPPA,etc.), in-services, department meetings, hospital communications, protocols, policies, procedures, etc.) so that duties and responsibilities are satisfactorily performed.
  • Demonstrates flexibility to meet workload so that this is accomplished when: effectively works in other areas through completion of cross training; demonstrates willingness to increase scheduled hours of work as needed; Partners with other staff to meet staffing needs.

Qualifications & Experience

Education:
Essential:
  • High School or Equivalent

Education equivalent experience:
Essential:
  • Completion of an accredited Electroencephalographic program.


Other information:
Certifications Essential: None required, however, registration with the American Society of Electroencephalographic Technologists is a requirement (ASET)
Experience Essential: Graduate from an accredited EEG program
Experience Preferred: Minimum five years of experience in EEG
