R&D Mechanical Engineer – Sperry Drilling:

This opening is for a principal level mechanical engineering position in the technology department of Sperry Drilling which is a Halliburton Product Service Line. Sperry products encompass a complete line of downhole tools for drilling and logging while drilling (LWD). These tools are designed to withstand the most extreme drilling environments while still making laboratory grade measurements. This position offers exceptionally broad exposure to all aspects of mechanical engineering and design.


Responsibilities:

  • The principal role includes active participation in mechanical engineering development as well as leading other mechanical engineers in the development of Sperry downhole tools.
  • Candidate will work under the guidance of the lead mechanical engineer, but will also work independently on mechanical engineering tasks such as mechanical design, stress analysis, etc.
  • Candidate will participate in characterization, qualification, modeling, analysis, design, testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and design reviews for new and existing mechanical designs
  • Additional responsibilities include periodic reporting of planned and completed development activities, providing estimated completion dates, and prompt reporting of issues.
  • This includes communication with different groups including project management, immediate supervisor, electrical and software groups, and other team members, etc.


Requirements:

  • Experience with downhole tool mechanical design
  • Experience with SolidWorks mechanical modeling
  • Experience with the following mechanical engineering specialties:
    • FEA stress analysis
    • Basic hydraulic calculations
    • Basic statics and dynamics calculations
    • Understanding of shock and vibration
    • Knowledge of materials used in downhole tools
    • Knowledge of manufacturing techniques used to make downhole tool components
    • Packaging of M/LWD sensors


Education:

  • Requires a minimum degree of BS in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred


Work Experience:

  • At least 7 years of relevant work experience
  • Candidates having qualification that exceed the minimum job requirements will receive consideration for higher-level roles given (1) their experience, (2) additional job requirements, and/or (3) business needs.
