Systems Administrator III
Job Description
Under general direction, the purpose of the position is to perform technical and analytical work in developing infrastructure designs and plans for both current and future strategies for information management and information technology goals, objectives, and initiatives related to the network, voice and data, and information security. The employee is expected to have extensive knowledge and experience of Microsoft operating systems and infrastructure software, virtualization, storage area networks (SAN), security administration, and LAN and WAN infrastructure technologies. The employee is expected to show leadership and mentor less-experienced network and systems engineers.
The Systems Administrator III is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, health, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure. The Systems Administrator III leads and/or participates in technical research and development to enable continual innovation within the infrastructure. The Systems Administrator III ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational strategies and values, enabling County staff and customers.
Administration
- Determine the root causes of issues and communicate appropriately to internal and external customers.
- Develop and maintain installation, operations, and configuration procedures.
- Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware and software.
- Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off-site as necessary.
- Apply operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes.
- Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required.
- Provide technical support after normal work hours when necessary.
- Responsible for documenting the configuration of systems.
- Advise management on situations that may require additional client support or escalation.
- Consistently provide excellent customer service.
- Communicates to the customer the status of requests for technical assistance as well as establish a service level expectation with them.
- Follow all relevant standards and procedures.
- Thoroughly document incident descriptions, activities and resolutions.
- Develop and mature System Administration processes to ensure free flowing escalation and information within the organization.
- Introduce and integrate new technologies into existing data center environment.
- Design and implement highly-available hardware and software systems across multiple operating systems.
- Mentor and/or guide system administration team in locating the necessary tools and process to identify troublesome trends as they develop.
- Assists in developing strategic plans and identifies key success factors, sets priorities, and allocates the resources to achieve unit, division, and County goals.
- Assists with the budget planning. This includes infrastructure analysis, design and reorganization, so as to maximize the life and usefulness of network hardware and software.
- Performs duties as assigned and necessary which are related or logical in assignment to the position.
- Designing, installing and configuring new hardware and software.

- Migrate and/or upgrade hardware and software.
- Analyze application requirements, developers' needs, and technical constraints, then provide tailored solutions.
- Associate’s Degree in Information Technology or a closely related field.
- Proven ability to design, architect, develop, and maintain a medium to large-scale network and server environment.
- At least four (4) years of experience with at least one of the following:
- Active Directory administration and management (manage objects and groups)
- Virtualization technologies (VMware and Hyper-V)
- Enterprise backup technologies (Symantec NetBackup)
- Experience providing leadership or mentoring teams responsible for systems and/or network design, administration, and support.
- Experience with Azure cloud computing similar to:
- Migration
- Installation
- Administration
- Knowledge of scripting languages (PowerShell and VBScript)
- Experience managing small to medium-sized projects.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.
- An equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience may be considered in lieu of required education or experience.
- Extensive knowledge of principles and methods applied to information technology infrastructure, planning, implementation, and management.
- Extensive knowledge of the body of available and current information resources applicable to the department's functions for technical research purposes and for special projects as may be assigned.
- Ability to organize work, establish priorities, meet established deadlines, and follow up on assignments with minimum direction.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, division and department heads, public/private sector contacts, and County Administration.
- Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
- Extensive knowledge of the methods, tools, and techniques applied to diverse IT Support in complex multi-platform networked environments.
- Extensive knowledge of various current technologies relevant to existing applications, systems, and/or upcoming installations, e.g., Microsoft technologies; programming/scripting languages; web, server, and voice/data network technologies.
- Skill in reading and interpreting technical and trade journals, industry-specific periodicals, product/manufacturer specifications, and related technical information and data.
- Ability to analyze, implement, maintain, and repair new technological software and programs; ability to evaluate, diagnose and develop solutions to potential and real operational and system deficiencies to ensure continued and non-disrupted service to system users.
- Ability to utilize personal computers, standard office equipment, and standard software applications, e.g., word processors, database software, and spreadsheet applications.
- 50 pounds maximum lifting.
- Frequent (up to 2/3 of the work time) lifting, carrying up to 25 lbs.
- If less lifting is involved will require significant walking/standing.
- If mostly sitting is involved will require push/pull on arm or leg controls.
- Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear.
- Good eyesight for production or safety of self and others.
- Physical agility is required in kneeling, bending, stooping, and reaching.
- Required to have clear vision at distances of 20 inches or less.

Medical Health Reimbursement Account (HRA): The County contributes $500 per employee or $1,000 for employee plus dependents, for medical and prescription-related expenses.
State-of-the-Art Employee W ellnes s Center: The County provides a private health center for County Employees and eligible dependents. The Employee Wellness Center offers an array of primary care services, including sick visits, enhanced by x-ray services, pulmonary tests, lab work, and a dispensary offering over 200 generic medications onsite. Services at the Wellness Center are offered at no cost to the employees and their eligible dependents.
- Employees who are enrolled on the County’s Medical plan have access to the Employee Wellness Center on day one of employment. The Wellness Center is available to patients 8 years of age and older.
Short-Term and Long-Term Disability: At no cost to the employee. The County offers Short-Term and Long-Term Disability at 60% of the employee’s weekly base salary. The employee has the option to purchase an additional 10% coverage.
Membership in the Florida Retirement System: This benefit cannot be easily matched by a traditional 401k plan. Current County contributions are:

40 hours of Administrative Leave per fiscal year for Exempt employees.
