Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.


We are seeking driven and promising Postdoctoral Research Associate(s) who will support the Analytics and AI Methods at Scale (AAIMS) Group in the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) Division, Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Postdoc(s) will work in the broad intersection area of High-Performance Computing (HPC) and AI.


Examples on areas of research interest include but not limited to:

  • Computational performance of AI/ML algorithms, including the ability to use modern computing hardware and software frameworks efficiently.
  • Data parallelism, model-parallelism, collective communication patterns and strategies for large-scale, distributed machine learning using frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow.
  • Operational data (Power, energy, CPU/GPU utilization, job scheduling, large scale storage and I/O traces, system logs) analytics to enable data-driven intelligence and facility innovation
  • AI algorithms for handling sensitive data using methods such as Federated Learning, Differential Privacy, and Secure Multiparty Computing, among others.
  • Data analytics pipelines from the Edge to Exascale.
  • Visualization of large-scale HPC/AI discovery campaigns.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers on a variety of large-scale data analytics, and/or AI/ML-related research and projects
  • Present and report research results, publish scientific results in peer reviewed conferences/journals in a timely fashion


Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field completed within the last 5 years


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Solid record of productive research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed conferences or journals, and/or open-source software development
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
