Job Summary

SABIC’s technology Center in Houston is looking for an energetic and motivated researcher to conduct laboratory experiments and draw inferences from data to support research in developing technology for new products and processes and improving existing processes.


How You Can Be the Impact

(Job Responsibilities)

The purpose of this role is to:

  • Support and contribute to the delivery of results on research and development projects with business impact by specifying, building and operating lab reactor systems in timely manner and in accordance with safety guidelines. Applying the above skills to polymerization/high viscosity systems is a plus. Experience in conducting catalytic reactions a plus.
  • Design experiments to collect high quality data and analyze laboratory reactor data to extract key parameters (conversions and selectivity, mass balance) and iterate towards best performance as needed to support the progress of R&D projects.
  • Support the project team by independently executing a smaller-scale laboratory projects or a well-defined part of a larger project with clear short-term deliverables. Good time management and execution skills. The candidate needs to have a solid understanding of applied chemical engineering, laboratory and techniques, set up and operate laboratory equipment, make detailed observations and interpretation of the data.
  • Report key findings to project team via written reports and oral presentations.
  • Experience with safe laboratory practices like Management of Change (MOC) procedures, Safety Risk Assessments (SRAs), and proper chemical management desirable
  • Experience in developing P&IDs of laboratory operation, construction and operating reactor units such as fixed bed reactors as well as batch Parr reactors (PLC programming skills are considered a plus)
  • Experience with using statistical tools to design experiments and analyze data is a plus.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining analytical instruments to measure composition is a plus.
  • Maintain focus and understand personal impact on achieving project goals

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering with 0-3 years’ experience (MS/BS in Chemical Engineering with 5 - 8 years’ experience in a research laboratory)
  • Experience in polymerization/high viscosity systems is preferred
  • Demonstrated experimental skills in designing experiments to test hypothesis
  • A strong foundation in various unit operations including reaction engineering
  • A learning, growth mindset with flexibility to take on new responsibilities with evolving business needs
  • A team player, able to work effectively in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams with excellent interpersonal skills. Must be able to work well with diverse teams and under the guidance of project leaders and senior technical staff
  • A critical observer as well as a conceptual and analytical thinker with a demonstrated record of accomplishment of research excellence.
  • Strong communication skills (oral, written, presentation) as well as listening skills
  • Basic project management skills for planning, organizing tasks and managing priorities
  • Performs given assignment within time limits and strives for high quality results
  • Independently develops and applies advanced skills and knowledge. Curious and eager to learn.
