Position Information


TxDOT’s Austin District
is looking for an Assistant Area Engineer for the Burnet Area Office located in Burnet, Texas. This position assists in directing area office operations and assists in managing and supervising employees involved in construction, design, maintenance, survey, laboratory activities and office operations. This position reports to the Area Engineer, who has full authority for approval of all work. This position is responsible for the operations of the area office in the absence of the Area Engineer. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

  • Assistant Area Engineer: B29 ($92,390.00 - $115,000.00/yearly)

Position Description


Assists in directing area office operations. Assists in managing and supervises employees involved in construction, design, maintenance, survey, laboratory activities and office operations. Reports to the Area Engineer, who has full authority for approval of all work. Responsible for the operations of the area office in the absence of the Area Engineer. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists Area Engineer in projecting personnel and equipment needed for each project; as required responds for emergency situations/conditions to assist with office activities.
  • Conducts pre-construction, Employee Forum and/or safety meetings.
  • Determines quantities and estimates cost.
  • Oversees right-of-way, design and/or plan preparation for area office.
  • Performs research and planning on future projects.
  • Prepares and/or recommends field changes and supplemental agreements.
  • Resolves public complaints.
  • Reviews plans prepared by area office personnel; checks designs, specifications and estimates.
  • Works with governmental officials on behalf of the Area Engineer.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires you to drive for TxDOT.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience: 4 years transportation engineering. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Licensed Prof Engineer*
  • No supervisory experience required
  • Professional engineers licensed in another state, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

  • Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
  • Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
  • Construction engineering policies and procedures
  • Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
  • Applying engineering principles, practices and methods in job responsibilities
  • Supervising technical staff
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
  • Communicating technical information effectively
  • Exercises logic and reasoning to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; makes decisions that support business objectives and goals

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
