The Senior Engineer will contribute to the company’s expanding solar, wind, and BESS project portfolio as a subject matter expert on interconnection planning studies, power flow analysis, high voltage (substation) engineering, high voltage protection, substation operations and NERC compliance. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in the development of new interconnection applications, completing targeted analysis of interconnection study reports, validating generator interconnection power flow studies, working with the business development team to develop market-level interconnection strategies. The candidate should have previous experience working on transmission/substation projects.
Core Responsibilities:
- Complete internal feasibility analysis of potential project sites using available transmission data and provide guidance to business development team. Analyze generator interconnection study reports, validate findings with targeted power flow analysis, and summarize findings to business development team.
- Review all design drawings related to high voltage, substation, and grid interconnection activities. Review field data and perform coordination, short circuit analysis, and arc flash studies.
- Develop power flow base cases, as necessary, to identify project constraints. Develop generator dynamic models and short circuit models for interconnection applications, where necessary.
- Establish working knowledge of various equipment suppliers’ technologies. Stay informed of technical developments, industry codes and regulatory requirements, which have an engineering impact. Assist with creating engineering standardizations and procedures to facilitate the Construction and Development teams.
Education:
- Undergraduate engineering degree from an accredited college or university required
- Professional Engineer (PE) license a plus
Experience:
- 7+ years electrical engineering experience in energy-related technologies and applications required
- Power transmission and distribution systems experience required
- Knowledge of Volt/Var Control; Power/Frequency Control, ISO market rules (CAISO, ERCOT, SPP, PJM), Renewable Generator Models, Geomagnetic Disturbance Analysis
- Specific experience in the design, evaluation and operation of large-scale renewable technologies strongly preferred.
- Experience in the overall aspects of design engineering, construction, start-up/commissioning, and subsequent O&M of utility energy projects
- Prior work experience in a power generating environment is a plus
- Working knowledge of electricity and hazards posed by electrical equipment and conductors is required
- Working knowledge of predictive maintenance technologies and ability to establish maintenance programs
- Participate in Project Kickoff meetings to discuss in detail work scope and specifications.
- Provide on-call phone support to clients and co-workers. Perform site visits as necessary to achieve company objectives.
