OUC - The Reliable One, an industry leader and the second largest municipal utility in Florida committed to serving the community and the environment, is presently seeking a Line Technician III to join the Electric & Water Distribution division.
This is an experienced apprentice position in a craft area job ladder with advancement to journeymen (Line Technician I) level work. This employee has at least six month’s experience in construction and maintenance of overhead and underground electric distribution systems through 35kv. Work involves pole climbing and equipment operation and is performed at elevated heights and in enclosed (below grade) spaces. Work is performed on energized systems through 600 volts (secondary voltage) under direct supervision of a fully qualified Line Technician II or above. No work is performed on energized systems above 600 volts. The selection process for this position involves a written exam, field assessment and interview.

The ideal candidate will have:
- High school diploma or GED;
- Minimum Six (6) months as an OUC Apprentice Line Technician or possession of certification from a Line Technician college (or equivalent apprenticeship/certification);
- Valid Florida Driver’s License;
- Class A Florida CDL;
- Completion of Line Tech Apprentice Field Sign off book to include Assembly, Equipment Operation, Over Head Material, URD Materials, Tasks, and Tools sections (or equivalent if external hire);
- Maintenance of safety certifications acquired at the Apprentice Line Technician level (required upon hire if internal, within 6 months if external);

Job Purpose:
This is an experienced apprentice position in a craft area job ladder with advancement to journeymen (Line Technician I) level work. This employee has at least six month’s experience in construction and maintenance of overhead and underground electric distribution systems through 35kv. Work involves pole climbing and equipment operation and is performed at elevated heights and in enclosed (below grade) spaces. Work is performed on energized systems through 600 volts (secondary voltage) under direct supervision of a fully qualified Line Technician II or above. No work is performed on energized systems above 600 volts.
Primary Functions:
- Perform line work on all de-energized facilities and work on energized secondary conductors and attachments (under 600 volts) under general supervision of a Line Technician II or above;
- Operate switching devices with insulated hot line tool while under the direction of a Line Technician I or above;
- Prepare materials and assist in the construction and maintenance of overhead lines, setting/climbing poles, installing overhead transformers and wires, and assembling various components;
- Prepare materials and assist in the construction and maintenance of underground lines; setting pad mounted and below grade transformers, installing cables and conductors, and assembling various components;
- Support troubleshooting of overhead and underground power lines in a shift work environment to install/restore electric services, make repairs to high voltage facilities, respond to system emergencies, accomplish objectives for system operation and facilitate a high quality of customer service;
- Operate all manner of bucket trucks, boom trucks, line trucks, hydraulic equipment and mechanical tools/devices associated with utility line work;
- Participate in the OUC provided line technician trainings for the current level while keeping their lead/supervisor aware of trainings and demonstration sign-offs still needed for progression;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Technical Requirements:
- Working knowledge of, but not limited to, the following:
- Construction and maintenance tasks of overhead and underground electric systems learned during the Apprentice Line Technician level;
- Familiarity with, but not limited to, the following:
- Knowledge of: mathematics to include graphic arithmetic, principles of mechanical concepts, reading comprehension (CAST Test competencies)
- Use of materials, equipment, and utility line work methods;
- Electrical or mechanical systems;
- Use of the following equipment:
- Trucks (e.g. bucket trucks, line trucks)
- Hydraulic equipment
- Mechanical tools/devices associated with utility line work
- Abilities to include:
- Showing others how to succeed and set an example for others (mentoring/coaching);
- Taking direction and demonstrating an eagerness to learn.
- Passing of the EEI CAST Test (Edison Electric Institute’s Construction and Skill Trades Test)
Education/ Certification/ Years of Experience Requirements:

Working Conditions:
This job involves Very Frequently working at heights (upwards of 150 ft) and confined areas. This job involves frequent exposure to extreme weather conditions and insects. This job may involve Occasional exposure to noxious fumes and excessive noise. Employees are expected to work overtime and respond to call out for work, occasionally on very short notice, at all hours, on weekends/holidays and in all manner of inclement weather.
Physical Requirements:
This job consists of Very Frequent standing, lifting up to twenty (20) lbs, bending/stooping, speaking, and hearing. Pole climbing and working at elevated heights (upwards of 150 ft) and working for extended periods in below grade enclosed spaces are very frequently required. This job consists of Frequent walking, lifting up to forty (40) lbs, pushing, pulling, digging, kneeling and/or crawling. This job consists of Occasional sitting, lifting over 50 (50+) lbs, and may involve Occasional writing.
