NETWORK DESIGN ENGINEER
Job Description
I. OBJECTIVE
To design outside plant facilities following FTCs Best Practices. To coordinate GIS data management with other departments as needed. To assist in grant applications and reporting for the construction of fiber networks and all other goals set by the Plant Design Supervisor.
II. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
A. Reports to: Plant Design Supervisor
III. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Personally performs the following activities unique to this position:
1. Assists in the design and implementation of the FTC Plant Network and associated GIS records.
2. Coordinates Outside Plant Projects through FTC Best Practices steps:
1. Planning/Design
2. Approval
3. Staking
4. Permitting
5. Construction
6. Assignment of counts
7. Splicing
8. Testing
9. Posting
10. Closeout
11. Quality Control
3. Works with IS Personnel to develop an understanding of the FTC GIS system. Provides technical and procedural support of the FTC GIS system to others in Corporate Engineering, Marketing, Sales, etc. Capable of training and advising existing and new users on the system.
4. Coordinates grant applications. Will be involved in completion, submission and reporting to the proper funding agencies.
5. Works with Corporate Engineering and District Engineering in the materials utilized in the construction of fiber networks.
6. Works with the Senior Plant Designer in developing an understanding of the methods used to create facility designs for the FTC network.
7. Works with District Engineering and contract personnel in procuring of easements to facilitate the placement of network facilities.
8. Complies with all safety rules and regulations.
9. Performs other duties as directed.
IV. EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
A. McCall Thomas Engineering: Manages two way flow of information detailing field work concerning the construction and maintenance of fiber optic networks.
B. Palmetto Engineering: Manages two way flow of information detailing field work concerning the construction and maintenance of fiber optic networks.
C. GIS Software: Works with current vendors to learn of new releases or software functions to assist in the design or recording of network facilities.
D. Fiber Network Equipment: Works with vendors to stay abreast of new products or methods of construction in the construction and maintenance of fiber optic networks.
REQUIRED: Bachelors Degree in Engineering; Ability to learn outside plant network facilities and develop an understanding of fiber optic cable design. Excellent working knowledge of personal computers; Understanding of Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office applications; Detail oriented.
DESIRED: Two years of fiber optic design experience (preferably RUS); Working knowledge of GIS Mapping utilizing Esri, AutoCad, or equivalent computer aided drafting software; Understanding of printers, plotters, digitizers and related CAD hardware and software.
