Purpose of Position
DPS has one of the most complex networks in the State of New Mexico consisting of over 50 physical DPS / New Mexico State Police (NMSP) offices including DPS headquarters, the NM Law Enforcement Academy, 3 forensic labs, 3 911 communications / dispatch centers, 12 NMSP district offices, and a significant number of permanent and transitory sub-stations in key locations around the state including the Governor's Mansion. In addition to the physical locations, 650 NMSP patrol units, 1 helicopter and mobile command centers are part of the DPS network. The network is accessed 24 hours per day 7 days per week with no tolerance for downtime by DPS civilian staff, NMSP, and all federal, state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies (LEAs) to receive mission-critical access to CJIS and many other systems. This access is provided by both site-to-site and VPN appliance connections.
Thus, the Network Administrator II is responsible for monitoring these connections, as well as designing and implementing new topologies which include (but is not limited to) the installation of routers, switches, firewalls, WiFi Controllers, Access Points, and any other networking devices necessary to maintain a reliable connection and a safe network environment; similarly, the incumbent works and evaluates emerging technologies from lead vendors in the IT industry to ensure DPS is utilizing the best products available. Additionally, this position provides support to other IT personnel, DPS employees, and local law enforcement agencies that need access to national or local criminal justice databases. For these reasons and more reasons, the Network Administrator II works closely with Cyber-Security engineers on identifying and mitigatating any potential flaws that could impact the integrity of the network.

How does it get done?
1. Network Infrastructure Support: The incumbent will monitor all critical network systems for errors and security breaches. All problems resulting in outages should be reported immediately to management. All planned outages should be schedule in advance and approved by management. All changes to production equipment must have a Change Control document signed by the Change Control Board in advance of a change. 35%
2. Network Infrastructure Disaster Recovery: Support the disaster recovery activities by documenting and testing DR plans. The goal of 99.99% uptime is the goal to achieve. The disaster plan should be tested on a regular basis to ensure process and procedures are current and usable. 10%
3. Generate and keep current all network infrastructure related documentation. 10%
4. Help Desk Tickets¿address ticket requests in a timely manner and to the satisfaction of the customer. Contact customers within two (2) business hours of ticket assignment to provide an estimated completion time and the status of the ticket. Details of calls shall be logged into the Help Desk Ticket Application for historical purposes including the solution until the request is resolved. Add information about common and frequent problems to the Help Desk Knowledge Base for future reference. 35%
5. Provide 24x7 on-call support for the DPS on a rotating basis with other Network support personnel. 10%
Who are the customers?
Law Enforcement Officers, Internal DPS Employees and External Criminal Justice Agencies.
Ideal Candidate
3-5 Years of experience working within a networking environment.
3-5 years experience maintaining network equipment (Switches, Routers and Firewalls).
2-5 years experience maintaining Juniper specific network environments preferred.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, Engineering or similar technical degree and two (2) years of experience in network administration. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Working Conditions
State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.
Work is performed in a law enforcement office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Occasionally work extra hours, weekends and holidays. Some travel may be required. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
