Job Description:

Ideal employee will serve as an Physicist/Electrical Engineer and a member of a multi-disciplined research team under the guidance and leadership of the Experimental Test Director. The employee shall be responsible for participating in laboratory operations, multi-disciplined research experiments, including all aspects of planning, preparation, execution, analysis, and reporting. As part of the experimental technical team, the ability to communicate effectively plans, progress, status, and technical issues, both verbally and as written reports is required.

Duties will include electrical/mechanical design support and performing preventive maintenance checks on equipment and mechanical operating systems; ensuring electrical and mechanical operations, standards, and controls are maintained at the highest levels of quality. Other required skills are the ability to operate and interface test equipment and to diagnose and resolve problems with laboratory systems. Additional education or relevant experience in physics or materials science is desired, including the collection and analysis of test data. Other responsibilities will include ensuring that electrical and mechanical system designs are compliant with regulations and that the engineered physical systems are integrated to the facility in accordance with drawings and specifications.

The employee shall be responsible for completing all tasks with strict adherence to the safety policies defined by NASA Langley Research Center and the experimental test director, and for reporting safety hazards, potentially hazardous situations, and “close calls” to the Experimental Test Director and Facility Safety Head.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent
  • Modeling, simulation, and data analysis with MATLAB, Simulink, Python, and Mathematica is desired.
  • Willingness to jump in and take on new tasks to support the team.
  • Experience with MS Office products is required.
  • Ability to read and modify system engineering drawings.
  • Additional knowledge of material science or physics.
  • A ‘can do’ attitude and the desire and ability to learn difficult tasks.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Work effectively as a member of a team, share ideas, and contribute to each task and project.
  • Must pass drug and alcohol testing; position is subject to random testing.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top-Secret clearance.
