Web Developer, Accessibility

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of a degree, four (4) years of full-time directly related experience, or a combination of education and experience totaling four (4) full-time years may be considered. Two (2) years of full-time, relevant work experience in HTML/CSS/Javascript development.

Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree, preferably in a computer-related field. Expertise in XML, PHP, HTML5 and CSS3. Experience developing code and custom websites from scratch using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Experience with website accessibility testing and remediation in line with web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.1 A and AA). Experience with digital accessibility remediation using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, WAI-ARIA,and related web technology. Experience with servers, databases and security. Experience testing with assistive technologies, such as screen readers. Experience with documentation and training.

Brief Description of Duties:
The Front-End Web Developer, reporting into the Assistant Web Director and working with the rest of the digital team, will facilitate the implementation and support of Stony Brook University's enterprise website accessibility compliance. Incumbent in this position will work in accessibility tools to run scans, triage issues, and run reporting to meet all accessibility guidelines. They will work with internal and external teams in a project management capacity to educate, train, and ensure success in web accessibility with all constituents across campus. This position will also support other web development as needed, currently in OmniCMS Content Management System and WordPress. Incumbent must have the ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

  • Develop and fix code to improve the issues flagged by the accessibility tool, users, and Disability Support Services.
  • Work in the accessibility tool to customize settings, run scans, triage issues, and run reporting for distribution to various stakeholders across campus and work as a project manager to ensure improvements are being made.
  • Develop new sites, snippets and components for our CMS.
  • Providing accessibility technical guidance and training to internal and external partners.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,026 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

This position may be eligible for alternative workplace arrangements/telework (remote or virtual) or hybrid.
