Description

The Powertrain simulation section in Caterpillar’s Virtual Product Development (VPD) division has an opportunity for an experienced engineer to lead projects and deliver simulation support to enhance the performance, durability, and reliability of mechanical drivetrain products. This position will spend 50% of time as an individual contributor and perform simulation tasks and spend the other 50% of time to provide guidance and mentorship to eight team members in India and Mexico to deliver the simulation services.

Job Duties

  • Develop and maintain a keen understanding of internal and external customers' needs
  • Help concept, design, develop and validate complex mechanical drivetrain hardware and controls systems to meet product requirements
  • Work closely with drivetrain engineers to help decompose machine level requirements and develop validation plans for NPI/CPI programs by participating in requirements and simulation/test collaboration workshops (STCWs)
  • Collaborate with process partners across design, mechatronics, controls software, and test groups to develop and maintain project execution plans, manage communication, and escalate roadblocks
  • Define test plans and procedures, identify optimum test channels for simulation needs, execute validation tasks including model correlation, performing data analysis, identifying problems, and providing solutions with completed staff work
  • While individually executing some of the project work (~50%), mentor, coach, and support local/overseas team members to develop/update, integrate, and validate drivetrain, oil system, machine hardware and controls systems models per corporate modeling standards and maintain them in corporate version controls systems
  • Schedule/participate in design reviews to share recommendations with process partners and document key findings
  • Utilize current standard work processes and compile new lessons learned into best practice documents
  • Support gaps analysis and MGPPs for methods, tools, and processes
  • Use/generate automation scripts to execute simulations and process results to gain efficiency

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus at least 6 years of simulation experience, or a Master’s degree plus at least 4 years of simulation experience in either Mechanical, Automotive, Aerospace or Mechatronics engineering disciplines
  • Experience with 1D multi-physics and multi-domain modeling software, such as Dynasty, Amesim, GT-Suite, and MATLAB/Simulink
  • Experience working with model-based controls in MATLAB/Simulink
  • Self-starter with strong customer focus, leadership skills, analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to perform complex assignments and/or simultaneously manage multiple projects with team members
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively with team members and process partners
  • Good planning and organizing skills

Top Candidates will also have

  • Demonstrated experience with leading teams and delivering results per agreed timelines
  • Experience with modeling and simulation of drivetrain systems, including torque converters, oil system, controls valves, and clutches/brakes
  • Experience with Software in the Loop (SiL) principles and using dynamic systems modeling for controls development
  • Experience with data analysis and visualization tools
  • Experience with DOEs, optimization and robust design
  • Six Sigma black belt/green belt experience
  • Scripting experience in Python and/or MATLAB
  • Using version control tools, such as Git, for model management
