We are currently seeking a Vehicle Mechanical Engineer at the Associate or Senior Associate level with a fundamental interest in the automotive field for our Vehicle Engineering Practice in Menlo Park, CA. In this role, you will work as part of a team responsible for the analysis of transportation accidents, mechanical failures, and the design of consumer and industrial products. It is expected that some projects will include field inspections of vehicles and crash sites, the setup and execution of various test programs, including full-scale handling tests, and component or control systems evaluations. You will be technically talented with good hands-on skills, have excellent communication skills, and be motivated to ultimately develop your own consulting practice and grow professionally within Exponent. We also expect you to ultimately develop specialized expertise in the automotive field such as the design and performance of existing or emerging automotive technology, or analysis and reconstruction of transportation accidents.

You will be responsible for:

  • Engineering analysis
  • Field and laboratory testing
  • Original research
  • Site, vehicle, and equipment inspections
  • Managing projects from initiation to completion and ensuring that Exponent meets its deadlines and produces an exceptional work product
  • Preparing written reports and presenting results/findings to diverse audiences
  • Overtime, after-hours work and extensive travel is often required

You will have the following skills and qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
  • Knowledge of automotive systems
  • Must have knowledge of dynamics and mechanical design
  • Field and/or lab measurement experience required
  • Must have analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of photography, CAD, automotive terminology, and autonomous/automated vehicles or technology is a significant plus
  • P.E. license or the willingness to obtain a P.E. license
  • Must be versatile and team-oriented
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to gather information from and convey technical conclusions to individuals in engineering, business, and industry
  • Dedication to quality and accuracy and the ability to support multiple group projects
  • Must have effective leadership skills with the ability to interact with managers, engineers, attorneys, media, and non-technical staff

Compensation

Our consultants are rewarded for their technical and business contributions and have an opportunity to plan for future success and career growth. Exponent's total compensation plan is consistent with its expectations of the quality and quantity of work performed and with the professional standards set by Exponent. At the Associate and Senior Associate level total compensation includes base salary, bi-weekly bonuses for high intensity efforts, annual bonus and 401(k) employer contribution of 7% of base salary.

The base salary range for this position is $95,000 - $140,000 depending on experience and capabilities which will be assessed during the interview process.
