Departmental Overview
The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of the Berkeley campus reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research. SSL's primary goal is to foster research in space-related sciences and to provide education for the next generation of space scientists. Research at SSL, led by Berkeley faculty and SSL Senior Fellows, focuses on experiments and observations carried out in space as well as theoretical and basic research.
Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) operates at UC Berkeley. The Science Data Center is part of the Mission Operations System (MOS) and is responsible for obtaining spacecraft data, verifying its integrity, processing it through modeling software and publishing the data to the correct vested parties. Our data is becoming more sophisticated and requires graphical representations presented to science teams for validation and then to the public for consumption.
Such systems utilize web-based interfaces and custom GUI tools for administration, deployment and archival. Visualizations are time critical in order to facilitate changes to spacecraft commanding and to detect instrument errors. Automation of these systems allows the scientists and engineers to sift through massive data in short times and rapidly deploy new software when needed.
The SDC is ever evolving as we take on new projects and a skilled software engineer is needed to join the team designing, implementing, testing, operating and documenting these systems.

Responsibilities
Design, develop, test and approve new systems to support new and current observatory projects.
Maintain and operate current systems.
Support design and development of improvements (including automation) to existing systems.
Communicate with vested parties (Principal Investigators, Science Teams, NASA, other science institutions) in joint discussions to develop system requirements.
Support mission design for new space missions and projects.
Research new technologies and recommend informed changes to current systems.
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated understanding of software design patterns.
Demonstrated proficiency in Java or C++ and object-oriented design skills.
Recent experience working within the software life-cycle and using best practices.
Proficiency with use of some form of version control (GIT preferred).
Experience documenting software.
Demonstrated ability to engage with and cooperate with a multi-disciplined team.
Knowledge of and basic experience using cloud services.
Education/Training;
Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Preferred Qualifications
2+ years professional experience preferred.
Demonstrated experience with database design and management
Leadership experience within the software lifecycle.
Previous experience working with scientists and/or hardware engineers.
An advanced degree in a relevant field.
Experience writing test harnesses, i.e. experience writing frameworks that perform automated testing of new code, including code that tests corner cases.
Willingness and desire to learn science programming languages if not already proficient (Python, Fortran, IDL, Matlab).
Amazon Web Services or equivalent cloud computing experience in previous job (e.g., migrating data, automating tasks, designing distributed systems, etc.)
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $101,300.00 - $157,000.00.
