This position requires the R&D Engineer to be an integral part of a small dynamic team that is improving and developing additions to a global product line with varied responsibilities. R&D engineer is responsible for solving problems across a multidisciplined area of sourcing, product improvements, applications, design and development related to R&D for Hale and FSG projects.
The successful candidate will actively solve problems involved and create original solutions in the design of new products and make improvements to existing products in addition to studies, testing, validation, and development of supporting documentation while communicating across various disciplines internally and outside the company.
Essential requirements
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent 5–10-year technical experience with progressive varied engineering experience including an emphasis on concept thru aftermarket product design and support involving communication with varied stakeholders.
- Ability to understand mechanical, hydraulic and electromechanical systems and how they function with software-based controls to effect overall systems operation.
- Possess a general understanding of basic coding concepts.
- Ability to design with 3D modeling software – preferably SolidWorks.
- Possess a general knowledge of component fits and tolerances.
- Ability or experience with one or more of the following: rotating machinery, gearboxes and bearings, pumps, or heavy-duty trucks and the networks that control them.
- Ability to understand and apply machine design fundamentals.
- Ability to apply physics concepts to practical solutions.
- Ability to design castings, weldments, and precision machined parts and assemblies.
- Ability to translate spatial concepts into concrete models and designs.
- Ability to develop detailed drawings and bills of materials for parts and assemblies.
- Skilled with Microsoft Office Suite
- Accuracy, attention to detail, and excellent communications skills.
Preferred/desirable requirements:
- Superior ability to produce creative and practical solutions to difficult problems in a fast paced, cross functional, multi-tasking environment.
- Ability to seamlessly interface with electrical and software disciplines & support those projects.
- Ability to design centrifugal pump assemblies.
- Ability to use flow simulation and FEA modelling software.
- Ability to design sand cast and investment cast parts.
- Ability to design sheet metal, weldments, and fabricated assemblies.
- Ability to use ERP system, preferably JDEdwards.
- Ability to flow chart system functions and create high level functional logic block diagrams.
- Experience with GD&T.
- Experience with Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Perform Tests or Assist in the performing of tests to qualify components or concepts.
- Support software development of new products.
- Creation and editing of models and assemblies in SolidWorks.
- Development of detail drawings, bills of material, specifications.
- Update existing production designs and drawings.
- Establish test plans to validate new/modified designs or benchmark existing designs.
- Search for new or replacement components
- Prepare engineering changes, process documentation, and reports.
- Interface with sales, product management, manufacturing, programmers, outside suppliers, and end users. Excellent communication skills.
- Analyze customer requirements and test results and propose solutions.
- Research alternative methods, components, designs, processes, or materials.
- Respond to internal or external technical problems and pursue to resolution.
- Produce documentation in the form of bulletins and manuals.
- Generate novel and practical solutions to a variety of problems.

Work Environment
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally exposed to hot, wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate typical of an office with occasional work requiring hearing and eye protection and occasional hearing protection. Work duties may require significant time in production areas, test house, or outside test pad or remote test sites.
