The **Automation Engineer - Projects** is responsible for leading and assuring success of assigned automation projects from concept development through funding approval, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and start-up. The Automation Engineer, Projects ensures the projects are technically sound, achieve safety and environmental objectives, and are consistent with PSM management of change.
+ Stay current on Automation technology, particularly in the areas of DCS, PLC, and Networking
+ Adhere to the Wood River Refinery project work process while managing multiple projects
+ Establish project objectives and ensure they are met with respect to safety, environmental, quality, reliability, cost, and schedule
+ Coordinate project work with internal customers, as well as outside engineering/construction contractors
+ Develop automation project engineering skills to support assignments
+ Assist in the development of standards, best practices, and guidelines with respect to industrial automation. Promote standards through internal and external networking
+ Work with the key stakeholders to ensure the project scope will meet project objectives
+ Develop a procurement and construction execution strategy
+ Utilize estimating and scheduling tools to develop project estimates and schedules for funding authorization requests (AFD/AFE)
+ Develop funding requests (AFD / AFE) using good communication skills and engaging appropriate refinery work groups
+ Obtain engineering resources for the project using an established work process
+ Coordinate detailed engineering with mechanical, civil, instrument, and electrical resources to ensure projects are technically sound, cost effective, and customer focused
+ Develop specifications and designs for automation systems including networks. Determine software licensing requirements, oversee regulatory controls development, and manage graphics development.
+ Utilize P66 Refinery Engineering Practices (REPs) and industry standards for assigned projects
+ Follow Management of Change work process through project steps and utilize related software (KMS)
+ Identify and implement innovation and trends into the project plan to reduce cost and schedule.
+ Oversee automation engineering contractors and all automation project deliverables (complex loops, graphics, training packages)
+ Develop project execution plans and project milestone schedules
+ Conduct and document project progress meetings (technical, safety, status, etc.) and provide direction for making decisions as issues arise to accomplish all project objectives
+ Issue IFC packages to construction
+ Conduct Factory Acceptance and Site Acceptance Tests for DCS and PLC systems. Support Safety System Acceptance Tests performed and documented by Instrument and Shutdown Systems Engineer.
+ Fully integrate project execution with refinery needs including turnarounds
+ Work with construction coordinator to monitor quality cost, and schedule
+ Oversee automation hardware installation and power up checks
+ Coordinate implementation/download of automation logic, code, and asset structure. Resolve issues that arise. Decommission obsolete automation equipment, software, logic, etc.
+ Deliver functional plant historian tags and displays.
+ Facilitate alarm rationalization and deliver completed alarms for project implementation.
+ Evaluate and recommend approval / dis-approval of field change and scope change requests.
+ Drive proper management of change processes, including pre-startup, post-startup, and close-out actions
+ Work closely with Operations to assure project is successfully commissioned and started up
+ Communication - Excellent communication skills and being able to communicate technical issues relative to business benefits and needs. Listens carefully to other’s opinions and ideas

+ B.S. degree in Engineering
+ 5 or more years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of field instrumentation, processes control, and safety systems within refining or a related industrial industry
+ 10 or more years of refining or related industry experience
+ 10 or more years of experience with Honeywell control systems
+ Previous experience in managing/executing Automation projects
+ Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
+ Strong analytical and organizational skills
The **Wood River Refinery** is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
