Boeing Defense Space & Security has an exciting opportunity for an innovative, self-reliant, people friendly, and highly motivated Spacecraft Mechanisms Engineer (Experienced or Lead) to join our Experimental Systems Group (ESG). ESG supports a variety of government customers spanning technology domains, and is an extremely fast-paced, responsive development environment delivering new capabilities to customers rapidly and affordably. The ESG portfolio consists of a range of platforms and technologies including the X-37B, the world’s first fully autonomous reusable spaceplane, which recently landed from its sixth and most ambitious flight yet.
This position reports to the ESG Mechanical Subsystem Integration Senior Manager within the In-Space Vehicle Engineering capability and will be located at either Kennedy Space Center, FL or Seal Beach, CA.
Our teams are currently hiring for a broad range of experience levels including; Experienced or Lead Engineer.
The position provides an opportunity work with an experienced, interdisciplinary team to develop unique systems to meet challenging requirements on a dynamic development program.
Position Responsibilities:
Performance of Response Engineer (RE) responsibilities with a willingness to “own the hardware” for all phases of the mechanism life cycle
Work with suppliers and spacecraft factory operations in the procurement and refurbishment of spacecraft mechanisms for upcoming missions
Provide engineering oversight of mechanism integration and functional testing on the spacecraft
Work directly with manufacturing engineers, planners and technicians to plan and execute integration and test activity
Develop mechanical system specifications and test procedures
Read and interpret complex heritage drawings and coordinate revisions and configuration changes with the design team as need to support future missions
Perform real time trouble shooting and issue resolution, including the disposition of non-conformances (NCs)
Support ground and flight operations during critical mechanical system procedures
This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.
This position requires an active U.S. Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active)
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Bachelor's, Master's or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
3+ years of experience in a Mechanical Engineering role
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
5 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Ability to obtain T5 (Tier 5) formerly known as a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI)
Strong communication skills to interface with different program and customer teams
Proficiency with UG/NX CAD system and Teamcenter PDM, or equivalent
Experience providing design support for part fabrication or procurement, and on-vehicle installation
Typical Education & Experience:
Experienced (Level 3)
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
Lead (Level 4)
Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
