Repsol has an opening for a Hydraulic Fracturing and Numerical Simulation Engineer within the Subsurface TEP Excellence Center Business Unit, based in our US Headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas. The Hydraulic Fracturing and Numerical Simulation Engineer will report to the Excellence Center Subsurface Manager, Subsurface TEP, and TEP Executive Direction.
JOB SCOPE: As a Specialist in Hydraulic Fracturing and Numerical Simulation Engineering, you will be a member of a multidisciplinary Global Unconventional Subsurface Excellence Center, who is focused on mid and long-term activities such as subsurface modelling, production forecasting, analyses, and studies to maximize the value of the assets in Eagle Ford and Marcellus.
  • You will be responsible for the optimization of completions of horizontal wells (6,000 – 12,000 ft stimulated lateral length) with many hydraulic fractures (plug and perf), as well as the definition (together with the reservoir engineer) of the optimized well spacing, both on plane and in a staggered fashion. Frac designs for both parent and child wells are to be provided.
  • With the input of the Geomechanical model and the Static model from G&G, you will be in charge of history matching the executed frac stages (frac simulator) that will result in a given frac geometry. This will be used later in a numerical simulator to match the production performance of the wells in a pad. Once the needed parameters are calibrated and agreed with the reservoir engineer whose output will come from RTA, you will be asked to run sensitivities to the frac design to optimize the well performance and define spacing, wellbore placement and impact of timing on the drilling of future wells.
  • Together with other team members you will be responsible for the interpretation and integration of data coming from different sources such as interference tests, frac hits, tracers, microseismic surveys, sealed wellbore pressure responses, etc, to calibrate the frac models.
  • You will provide forecasts for modeled wells that will be contrasted with RTA and DCA.
  • Identification and modeling of refrac candidates and forecasting will also be part of your duties.
  • You will analyze daily data from ongoing frac operations to understand and optimize frac designs on the fly and support the completions team.
  • In addition, you will collaborate in putting together a data acquisition plan to mitigate the uncertainties in your realm.
GENERAL FUNCTIONS AND REPONSIBILITIES
  • Interact with other disciplines from the Excellence Center to define the optimum development scheme in unconventional reservoirs
  • Interact with and compare your results with the reservoir engineer´s DCA and RTA analysis to ensure alignment
  • Provide scaling factors to be applied to current type wells for new completion designs and well spacing
  • Relate past frac designs to actual well performance
  • Evaluate post frac treatments
  • Provide frac design inputs for new wells
  • Identify candidates for refracs and rejuvenation of old completions
  • Provide frac design inputs for defensive refracs
  • Interact with geomechanics and completions´ team
  • Define new pumping schedules
  • Screen the market for latest tools, techniques, frac designs and results of these
  • Colaborate in quarterly reporting of reserve/resource movements and balances
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Legally authorized for employment in the US, without sponsorship
  • B.Sc. degree in applicable engineering discipline; Masters degree or higher preferred
  • 10+ years of experience with an E&P Operator
  • 5+ years exposure to unconventional reservoirs
  • Proficient in hydraulic fracturing theory and practice
  • Solid knowledge of geomechanics
  • Interpretation of DFIT
  • Interpretation of step rate down tests
  • Strong understanding of Reservoir Fundamentals for both tight/unconventional gas and oil reservoirs
  • Proficient user of Petrel RE, Kinetix/Gohfer/Stimplan or similar, Eclipse/Intersect
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with IHS Harmony and Enersight
  • Field operations experience
  • Experience interpreting image logs to build DFN
