What you'll be doing:
The Operational Safety team assures safety in every operational stage including our closed course testing, validation testing on-road and our commercial driverless services. Our work ranges from collaborating with operations on measuring effectiveness of operator training to working with engineers on proactively identifying human factors risks to account for in feature designs. The Operational Safety Engineer will provide tactical safety leadership for our growing Commercial Operations team.
Perform risk assessment for safety critical operations using quantitative and qualitative methods.
Rapidly triage safety risk assessment and safety concern requests, events, and escalated issues to determine priority.
Contribute to operational risk assessment methodology development
Own end to end hazard identification and risk assessment process improvements
Articulate safety reports, summaries, and recommendations to risk owners and other executives
Support the Commercial Operations Risk Working Group activities and requests for safety process and risk improvements.
Assist with the development and execution of an operational safety audit program strategy and plan to ensure effective operational safety controls implementation across all geographies, programs, and modes of operation.
Perform frequent site audits and review field audit data to ensure operational safety controls are implemented and effective at the site. Implement corrective action plans to eliminate exposure to these risks at other sites.
Review concept of operations, operational procedures, training materials and operational changes for hazards and develop operational safety requirements to embed in the process to control risks.
Identify and monitor key performance metrics and indicators to ensure both process and continuous improvement. Reports on safety issues, trends, & recommendations to the Commercial Operations risk working group and our executives for the domains you support including updates to risk levels for future expansions.
Partner with the Safety & Systems team to develop methods to identify emerging risk trends and incorporate findings from commercial operations to the requirements and design process.
Serve as the operational safety representative in urgent fleet safety concerns or severe incident crisis management response for off-hours emergencies.
What you must have:
Familiarity with Risk Assessment methodologies
Demonstrate the ability to build trust and confidence with the operations team and influence continuous improvement for systems safety.
Enjoy working in a collegial yet highly fast-paced and effective culture.
Comfort with ambiguity; bias to action.
Excellent judgment and ability to remain unbiased and independent throughout all safety activities
Proven track record of root cause analysis in complex human factors and SW/HW systems
Ability to learn quickly, starting with little information and quickly becoming an expert in your domain
Proven experience at communicating data driven decisions to leadership
Strong project management skills to coordinate multiple risk assessment work streams simultaneously
Bonus points!
Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Safety, Human Factors or a related technical degree
Proficiency in extracting insights from and applying expert-provided data in the form of quantitative risk assessments, reliability analysis, and/or statistical data analysis
Expertise in Human & Organizational Performance and/or Systems Safety
Expertise in safety analysis for autonomous vehicles or similar industry
Experience within an operating Safety Management System
Understanding of System Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) and its application
Familiarity with JIRA and JAMA
The salary range for this position is $115,600 - 170,000. Compensation will vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. You may also be offered a bonus, restricted stock units, and benefits. These ranges are subject to change.
